Time at Camp Leads to Restored Family Relationship
Profile of Open Schools Worldwide - Uruguay

“What do you mean we won’t have our Open Schools program that week? Why not?” asked 12-year-old Nahuel. “Well, we’ll be participating in a church camp,” replied Alejandra Martinez, Coordinator for Open Schools ministry in Uruguay. “Can I go to the camp too?” Nahuel asked excitedly.
The camp was 4-days long (Thursday to Sunday) and was held in September at Alejandra’s church. She says, “It was a blessing to have him with us and share those days alongside other teenagers, both Christians and non-Christians.”
Nahuel has been part of the Open Schools program for 3 years now, but this was his first time to attend camp. He attends a church in the city of Ecilda Paullier. This church already had a relationship and connection to TeachBeyond and that’s how he learned of the Open Schools program. In his city the program is held at the mission base. It offers a structured environment and a wide variety of activities for the participants.
Since attending the camp, Nahuel has continued to come to the Open Schools program weekly. “His father even contacted us to express his gratitude for that time at camp,” notes Alejandra. “He told us that, starting that week, his son began reaching out to him to restore the relationship between them, since they live apart.” Repairing and restoring the relationship is something for which the father had been praying for a long time.
In Latin America, Open Schools now has programs in 4 countries: Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Argentina. Since starting as an after-school program in Caxias do Sul, Brazil in 2022 with just a few students, it has grown to serve more than 150 learners across 4 different countries.
The program aims to not only teach or provide literacy training but seeks to minister to the children's hearts and share the Gospel with them. Many of them have had the opportunity to know the Word of God that they might not have otherwise had.
“Testimonies like this boy’s, and so many others, show us how God is working through our Open Schools program,” says Alejandra. “Although we use education as a tool, our main mission is to minister to the hearts of the children so that they can know the Gospel and be free in Jesus Christ.”
